Images are important

Great websites have wonderful images. One website that consistently has great images is the NASA website. See some of NASA's best images at http://grin.hq.nasa.gov/.
What other websites have great images?

Suffolk University graduation photograph adds to its Homepage

Today, I went online to the Suffolk University Homepage and the photograph on that page was of a young African-American graduate speaking at the Suffolk University Commencement with distinguished faculty looking on behind her. This picture definitely adds to the website since it pictures the success of a student achieving her degree. It shows that all the hard work and expense paid off.

Find three examples of ineffective websites.

After typing the keyword “ineffective websites” I have come across the page http://www.webpagesthatsuck.com/worst-web-sites-of-2008.html
This site had several listed, and after looking at a few I didn’t need to look at why these site did so horrible. All of the listed below were so chaotic that I clicked off the page as soon as I recovered from being disoriented! There were too many colors, poor use of tables, which disorganized the page, and too many special effects with the fonts.
Simply put these pages need someone that understands web design as well as how to type html.

I found it nearly impossible to narrow down examples of great, effective photographs on a website. Then I started thinking about big events in history and the first thing that popped in to my head was the inauguration of President Barack Obama. It was difficult narrowing it down, but ultimately I settled on this photo from Boston.com (credit to AP Photo/Houston Chronicle, Mayra Beltran). I think it was the caption that hit me the most. It says, "Vertie Hodge, 74, weeps during an Inauguration Day party near Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. in Houston on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2009 after President Barack Obama delivered his speech after taking the oath of office, becoming the first black president in the United States." The fact the photograph is a close-up of her face makes it intimate, but the details of her face are striking. You can assume her age before reading the caption (allowing the viewer/reader to assume she was alive during the time of Martin Luther King, Jr.) and the single tear streaming down her face elicits goosebumps. It perfectly captures the emotion and intensity of the historic event. If you'd like to see the other photographs from the website, go to: http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2009/01/the_inauguration_of_president.html

On Time.com I discovered an image that adds to its accompanying article as well as the website as a whole by giving illustrative power to both. The article is about former Iraqi Baathists that crossed over into Syria during the Iraqi civil war and after becoming a part of the social fabric in Damascus, have now become the subject of an "escalating" dispute between the governments of Iraq and Syria which involves suicide bombers and stern claims of harboring fugitives.

The picture quite poignantly shows the huge size of a bomb crater outside a ministry building in Baghdad as well as a few citizens starting to stream plastic flowers along its massive rim. This picture adds to the website by giving it credence as a foreign news bureau and it gives the article's content immediacy and weight and also makes me want to explore the rest of the site. The obvious contrast between the fake flowers and the vestiges of the violent act is powerful in itself.

Blog No. 3 - Photo that Enhances Website

As soon as I saw the first page of Holly Hunt Interiors, http://www.hollyhunt.com/, I knew I was going to love their aesthetic/tone/taste -- from their furniture collections to their interior design abilities. Their images actually change and so does the style of some of the furniture but they all appeal to me in different ways. Some of their product and interior shots are so attractive that I would hang them in my home!
